Fiskars K344

Fiskars K344 is a gravel-biking helmet designed as part of a Fiskars brand extension project. The gravel biking helmet K-344 provides protection and comfort for riding on varied terrain, with extended coverage around the back and sides and 12 integrated vents for airflow.

Context

Gravel biking demands a helmet that balances protection, comfort, and versatility. Long rides over mixed terrain require, ventilation to manage heat and extended rear coverage for added safety. A secure fit and compatibility with eyewear are also essential for maintaining comfort across changing conditions.

Ideation

In the early design stage, we sketched to quickly explore a wide range of ideas and design directions. As the concepts evolve, the strongest features from different sketches are identified, and refined into new iterations.

Low-fidelity models are then made using plasticine to bring these concepts into a three-dimensional form.

Building Process

We started by sculpting a clay base, refining its form by hand, then carved and detailed the vents with precision tools. The final touch was the strap, made from sewn cording and 3D-printed components, pinned directly into the clay model.

Final Model

The final clay model captures the essence of Fiskars' functional and durable design philosophy. Carefully sculpted and refined, it showcases the helmet's extended coverage, vent placement, and overall form.

Fiskars’ Orange TM has been an integral feature of the brand since it’s origin in 1967.
